The Hop Pole Bewdley

For those planning a smaller, more informal reception I have just the solution for you! The Hop Pole, Bewdley is a fantastic family run pub/restaurant that offers private functions for parties for up to 24 seated guests.


I hate calling the Hop pole a 'pub' just because the whole operation from food, to decor is so well thought out and executed it is on another level. With a strong ethos of using local suppliers and a really welcoming atmosphere the Hop Pole would be fabulous for an intimate sit down wedding breakfast with your nearest and dearest. Darren has come from a role as head chef at the Elms Hotel, he is extremely talented and very passionate about creating a menu to suit you and your guests


IDEA... invite a few more friends later on in the evening to have a few drinks and raise a toast to you newlyweds. That way you get the best of both worlds - small and intimate daytime...  (slightly) less intimate but tonnes of fun in the evening!

DIY table plans


Planning a wedding is a great way to create a day that really represents you guys as a couple. A great way to do that is by adding your own DIY touches to the day. One way of doing this is by creating your own table plans. This is also a really great, cost effective idea if you are looking to cut back without compromising style.

Chalk boards are great fun and once the 'serious bit' is over, your guests can have loads of fun writing their own messages . I also really love this wheelbarrow plan,  filled with flowers to co ordinate with your day this is a really beautiful way to incorporate the plan in to your theme without paying for expensive stationary printers.

Rustic Romance - Florals




It may be raining outside... but a girl can dream. This particular one is of beautiful, rustic florals that look like they have been thrown together ( albeit extremely well!). The popular rustic arrangements of late seem to have taken on an almost candy colour palette quite often. This is a a really simple way to inject romance and nostalgia in to your big day without 'overdoing it'. Whether you are looking for a simple or hand tied bouquet or some inspiration for your table centres, I have included a couple of my favourite inspirational images I have collected. The Designer Vintage Bridal Show at Hagley Hall



FINALLY! 


A little bit of glamour is coming to the area... and it is on the door step at Hagley Hall. On 22nd and 23rd September the hall welcomes the Designer Vintage Bridal Show and it sounds just perfect! 


If you are a sucker for all things vintage, or even if you are just a classy bride with a love of timeless style then this is the show for you. With dress and accessory designers, caterers, cake makers, hair and make up artists and stationers to name a few - there is bound to be endless amounts to see. There are also stylists on hand to give expert advice, bloggers and workshops going on throughout the day.

There promises to be a huge selection of designers and retailers for high end to high street budget brides and I have got to say... there isn't a much more beautiful spot that Hagley Hall ( But I am getting married there so maybe a little biased - look out for St John's Church!)

Sponge Cakes... To Ice Or Not To Ice? THAT is the question!

In the quest to create the wedding of my dreams on a budget it isn't often that you cut costs accidentally... but I can confirm, it has happened! 
I am the first to admit, I hate icing. Texture, taste, the way it stays edible for so long....?? EURGH. Therefore being the bossy bride that I am, we were never going to have an iced wedding cake. So what was the alternative? 


A traditional sponge may sound boring but just take a look at how beautiful these are..

No icing apparently doesn't mean no fun!

Turns out.. this option is actually quite a bit cheaper too. We budgeted £300 for our cake... and were quoted and amazing £165 for a 4 tier vanilla sponge with black-currant jam and cream. I particularly like the fact that Kimmy is using the local grocer for seasonal fruit so we have the added 'feel good factor' knowing that we are supporting local business. We now also have the extra cash to create the 'dessert table' that I really wanted.. but couldn't afford. No icing means less labour ... I knew I wasn't destined for an iced option!

We are using my favorite cake shop,  Kimmy Loves Cake in Bewdley (Near Kidderminster) but I am sure that if you have a cake maker in mind already, they would be happy to create something like this for you. 

ATTENTION THOSE ON A TIGHT BUDGET.  This is such an easy option if fancy yourself as a big of a whiz in the kitchen, or even better - you have friends or family who are! A simple sponge can be decorated to fit you colour or design theme and saves a few pennies at the same time. Winner :)

So it would be rude after all that talk of venues to not share the place that we chose for our wedding day....

Red House Barn is a purpose built barn venue situated in beautiful Stoke Prior, Bromsgrove. The venue consists of the Redbrick Barn to host civil cermonies, the Timber Barn for the wedding breakfast and evening entertainment, private gardens and land and a gorgeous (and very cosy) snug area.


I won't lie... the light up dance floor was the deal maker for me, but this venue really does have everything that we could need for a relaxed and special day.  Take a look for yourself using the link below...

Wedding Venue SOS

Some say "Start with what you know" ... well that is good enough for me!

In the long and tedious search for our spring wedding 2013 we saw A LOT of venues across the Midlands. Sleek and sophisticated, grand and exquisite ... you name it - we have seen it. How great is it that even outside of London, and even away from the bustle of Birmingham, there is such a fabulous choice of venues for every couple looking for somewhere to tie the knot?!

So where were we going to find the perfect place to celebrate our own wedding day? The best advice I would give any couple would be to firstly write down the key facts.

  1. When do you want to get married? Do you want a winter wonderland or fabulous festival theme? All this will dictate the time of year that best suits the style of celebration you hope to achieve. Also, are the times of year to be avoided for personal reasons? For me it was the cricket season... hubby to be (htb) is a keen cricketer, as are many of his close friends. Although it pains me to say it, the months of April to September were off limits for our own search. I wasn't destined to have the summer garden party apparently...
  2. Are you getting married in the UK or abroad? From my experience this is something of a 'gut feeling' for either one or both of you, fairly early on. Talk openly about how you feel about getting married abroad. Some people LOVE the 'it's just you, me and those that love us' idea of a wedding far away. Some people would rather share their day with all their family and friends and can't imagine them not being there. There is no right or wrong!
  3. How many people do you anticipate inviting? This is a key factor in budgeting for the day but also on the venue that you choose. Bigger venues may require a minimum number of guests that sounds easy enough to meet.. but when you do the sums is just not possible! 60 people at £50 a head is £3000 before you even talk venue hire charge... not such a great idea afterall?
  4. Do you wish to tie the knott at the same venue as the reception? We have chosen to get married at my local church and hold the reception at a seperate venue. I will hold my hands up.. this is for more 'family tradition' reasons than a desire to be married in the eyes of God. But every couple is SO individual. For logistical reasons, this is going to be a little bit more complicated but to us, it is worth it. Again, have a chat and keep and open mind if you are unsure. Registry offices and 'in house' civil ceremony rooms are not the dark and dingy places that they are often associated with being. Take a look - you may be surprised.
  5. Is there a large number of people travelling to the wedding? Having a wide network of family and friends is fantastic for you guys, but may require some thought when planning your venue. Venues that offer overnight stay would be perfect as it is convenient for your guests and will ensure the dance floor stays packed the whole night! Most venues that offer overnight rooms will offer you a discounted package or block booking allocation for your guests so be sure to ask. Alternatively, if you do set your heart on a venue without accomodation - check to see if they have discounted rates set up with local hotels or even better, negotiate your own!
This isn't an exaustive list, but it is pretty important. Especially if you have no idea where to start...  Notice I haven't mentioned specific venues? Well thats because at this stage I would really suggest having an open mind - the best venues are the ones that take their guests by surprise and wows them.


Finally once you have discussed the points above with your partner, have a chat about any initial themes or ideas that you have about the wedding of your dreams. This will evolve over time so don't worry if you haven't got a clear image in your head.

Let me give you an example... htb and I had a couple of key points we knew straight off
  • We wanted something that really reflected the both of us as a couple
  • We don't like anything that looks overdone or too thought out
  • We wanted an intimate day for family and a HUGE party in the evening
  • We wanted to include as many local suppliers, friends and family in the planning as possible
So we decided on a modern barn converstion with all the rustic and natural feel of a barn, and a contemporary edge for a great evening reception. Small and personal rather than grand and luxurious was more our style.... but as I will keep repeating - every couple is individual! There really is no right or wrong.  

There is one final thing - ASK EVERYONE. Whether they have been married in the area, been to a wedding, know someone who had a wedding or even know a friend of a friend who got married, they may well throw up somewhere you have never heard of and that my friend, could be the place that you say 'I do'
